Colin Carlson, a sophomore at the University of Connecticut, is working toward a bachelor´s degree in ecology and evolutionary biology and a second degree in environmental studies. To that end, he wants to study abroad in South Africa this summer.
University officials have told Carlson that they think that at age 13, he´s too young to go by himself, so he´s filed suit against the university and the U.S. Department of Education based on age discrimination laws.
When I think of prodigies like Colin, I still think of Doogie Howser, M.D. As far as the decision goes, I don’t see how the university has a leg to stand on. They are not responsible to make these decisions for their students. Normally, their students are adults with legal autonomy. For a minor, parents fill that role. It certainly seems like the university feels a protectionist CYA policy should override their obligation to provide fair treatment to their students. [via ShortNews.com]
