School lunches are a threat to national security

School lunches have been called many things, but a group of retired military officers is giving them a new label: national security threat.

That’s not a reference to the mystery meat served up in the cafeteria line either. The retired officers are saying that school lunches have helped make the nation’s young people so fat that fewer of them can meet the military’s physical fitness standards, and recruitment is in jeopardy.

It’s possible to take Wii Fit data and extract it into a usable format! I was looking for this, so my data won’t be locked into a proprietary system (in case I decide to start tracking my weight in a different way) or in case I’d like to compute statistics with the data (which I will, eventually.) I’m sure I could handle the current level of commandline-foo required, but the author is planning on making it much easier:

My eventual goal will be to create an online parser where people can upload data.bin files from their wii fit save and have that data file converted into a csv that can be downloaded. Right now, this is a simple log of my sources – if you have ideas or other knowledge, please share it!
I haven’t run the code yet, but it doesn’t look like it extracts steps or waist size, which would be nice independent variables.

Going back to tracking my foods. This was clearly not a banner day for healthy choices, but it didn’t seem TOO bad. Sure, I had the birthday cake and pizza at work, but it seems I’ve forgotten what kind of impact that makes on your options for the rest of the day. Ultimately, I plan to get on a healthy longterm diet, but in the meantime, I need to make sure I stop having these 137% days.
By the way, the iPhone app I am using is LIVESTRONG.com’s Calorie Counter app, which uses the Daily Plate’s service. Seems like a fairly good choice, but ultimately I am going to be concerned with more than just calories.
